| Jeff was working as Father Christmas when a mother came up and explained that her daughter wouldn't be able to talk to Father Christmas because she was deaf. Well, Jeff is almost entirely deaf himself, and he turned to the little girl and started talking to her in sign language. Her eyes lit up. There was a still silence in the room. All these children waiting in line were just amazed. He had to be the real Father Christmas. He could talk to anybody |

Glühwein the lazy way. Place one bag of Teekanne's Winterzeit teabags in a mug of cold red wine. Place in the microwave and heat for circa 1 min 40 secs. Leave the bag in, or take out, depending on taste. Add sugar or sweetener to taste. The ultimate in laziness! Now tell your guests you spent hours preparing it and don't hang a slice of lemon on the glass because it will take too long! Click for more |

| Archive 2002 - The local newspaper, Hamburger Abendblatt, escorted an official quality control test team around the various Christmas markets in Hamburg in 2002 and came to the conclusion that most of the stands offering Glühwein were offering anything other than a top quality product. One stand was offering Glühwein that tasted a bit like cheese. The authorities were testing this wine to see what was in it and a fine was probably going to be handed out. We assume that the stands, for fear of being fined, have improved the quality of the wine since these controls. Most of the glueh wines tested had very little red wine, or they had used chemical additives instead of the traditional natural ingredients, as shown on this page |

In 1925 the first Adventkranz (Advent Wreath), with 4 candles, was lit in a catholic church in Cologne. Munich followed in 1930. Since then, the tradition has spread around the world. Around 1935 the first wreaths were consecrated for household use |

Most of us celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December and enjoy our Xmas lunch at 1pm. We also know for a fact that Santa comes down the chimney during the night and leaves our presents hanging over the fireplace or under the tree, so we can open our presents before lunch. In Germany St. Nikolaus is celebrated on the 6th of December and Christmas dinner is eaten on the evening of the 24th. Santa climbs in through the window on that day and presents are opened on the 24th. You are now in a position to celebrate twice and receive twice as many presents - or did we get that wrong? On St. Nikolaus Day, you should leave your shoes outside the door. If you have all been good boys and girls, you'll find chocolate in them! More... |

Roncalli: Daily from 11am to 9pm... Finally the search for a fairytale Christmas and an alternative romantic World to that of the hectic Christmas shopping stress is over. A small romantic style Christmas village market right in front of the impressive town hall/city hall in the city centre

| Special attractions in past years included the "Russian Swing ", a 10 meter high wooden ferris wheel with gold plated cars, as well as a roundabout from around the turn of the century with hand carved wooden horses. At the edge of the marketplace a very high Christmas tree and a light tower made from, what looks like, a radio mast was seen in 2002. One can sit in an almost 100 year old Viennese Café and enjoy the celebration. Cultural events take place daily. Christmas stories are read, and artistes perform. Roncalli promises the Hamburg people a journey into childhood, shining and radiating eyes and a mysterious charming World, as were if it from the fairy tale book itself. So, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Text translated |

| Sankt Nikolaus - St. Nikolaus |
| In German-speaking countries plus Holland and Belgium, December 6th is the most distinctive children's festival of the year. St. Nikolaus Eve is a time of festive stir, it is a time of whispers and giggles, and of heavy steps on the stairs. Shops are full of shaped biscuits, gilt gingerbreads, sometimes representing the saint, of sugar images, toys and other little gifts |
|
 |
| O Tannenbaum - O Christmas Tree |
| In the German-speaking countries the Christmas tree is part of the pre-Christian tradition of the "12 Rauhnächte" (12 harsh or wild nights), which later became the "Twelve Nights of Christmas." The tree is put up on December 24 and taken down after New Years or on January 6, known as "Twelfth Night." A part of the tradition of taking down the tree is the "Plündern," raiding the tree of cookies and sugar plums, an event, anxiously awaited by the children. January 6 is also known as "Three Kings." On that evening carolers, three of them dressed as the three kings or Magi, stroll from house to house. In some areas the old trees will be brought to a public place and burnt in a big bon-fire. January 7 ushers in the pre-Lenten Fasching or Carnival season |

Ingredients
For the puddings:
50g/2oz unsalted butter for greasing
250g/10oz suet
90g/3.5oz plain flour
90g/3.5oz fresh white breadcrumbs
25g/1oz candied lemon, finely diced
40g/1.5oz candied orange, finely diced
150g/6oz raisins
150g/6oz currants
150g/6oz sultanas
1 untreated lime, zest only, and juice of half the lime
90g/3.5oz soft brown sugar
2.5g/ 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg
2.5g/ 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1.25g/ 1/4 tsp salt
2 free range eggs
30ml/1fl oz dark rum
30ml/1fl oz brandy
300ml/1/2pt milk
For the whisky cream liqueur butter:
125g/5oz unsalted butter, softened
125g/5oz icing sugar, sifted
90ml/6tbsp whisky cream liqueur |
|
|
1. Lightly butter ten dariole moulds (info or image) and set aside - links updated 2009
2. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and leave to marinate overnight. The mixture should be fairly wet but if not add a little more milk and brandy, but do not go overboard on the brandy.
3. Divide the mixture between the prepared moulds, filling them to about 1cm/ 1/2in from the top.
4. Cut out a disc of greaseproof paper and place it on top of each, so that it is in contact with the mixture.
5. Lightly butter ten squares (just bigger than the top of a dariole mould) of greaseproof paper and sit ten equal sized squares of tin foil on the non-buttered side. Fold each one in the centre to create a pleat. Cover each pudding, buttered side down, securing the foil and parchment with string tied tightly around the outside.
6. Stand each basin on a cooling rack in a large pan filled with sufficient water to come two thirds of the way up the side of the pudding bowls. (You may need to use a couple of pans if making ten).
7. Bring to the boil and simmer for 40-50 minutes topping up with more water as necessary along the way. Be careful not to let the water level fall too far or else the pudding will not cook properly.
8. Cool and store in the fridge or a cool room until Christmas Day.
9. To reheat, return to the pan as before and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
10. Meanwhile, to make the whisky cream liqueur butter, soften the butter in a large bowl until creamy. Add the icing sugar and the liqueur, stirring well to combine.
11. Spoon the butter into the centre of a piece of cling film. Wrap the cling film around the butter to produce a sausage shape. Secure the ends tightly like a Christmas cracker. Refrigerate to harden.
12. Turn the puddings out onto each serving plate. Place a slice of the butter on top of each to just melt. Serve at once. |

Roast Turkey - Serves 10-12
Preparation time less than 30 mins
Cooking time over 2 hours
To prepare your turkey have your chosen stuffing ready or prepare stuffing balls afterwards to be roasted seperately.
4.5-6.5kg/10-12lb turkey, thawed if frozen, giblets removed
1 lemon, quartered
50g/2oz butter, at room temperature
20 cocktail sausages
10 rashers streaky bacon
Sage and parsley sprigs, to garnish
Method
On the day of cooking
1. Preheat the oven to 190/375F/Gas 5. Wash the turkey inside and out and dry well with kitchen paper.
2. Put the lemon quarters into the cavity. If you are stuffing the turkey, put the stuffing in the neck end pushing it upwards towards the breast (dont pull the neck skin too tightly, as the stuffing will expand during cooking). Secure the skin with wooden or metal skewers crossways, then tie the turkey legs together at the top of the drumsticks for a good shape. Weigh the turkey and calculate the cooking time at 18 minutes per 450g/1lb.
3. Grease a large roasting tin with a little of the butter. Smear the rest over the turkey skin and season well, then put in the tin. Loosley cover with foil and roast for the calculated time. Meanwhile, halve the bacon rashers, stretch slightly and wrap half around each sausage
4. Baste the turkey every hour. One hour before the end of cooking, remove the foil and drain off the excess fat. 30 minutes before the end of cooking, put the sausages around the turkey (if room) or in a separate lightly oiled tin.
5. To test whether the turkey is cooked, insert a skewer into the thickest part of the thigh - the juices should run clear. If they are pinkish, cook for 15 minutes more, then test again. Transfer the turkey and sausages and sausages to a platter, tightly cover with foil and allow to rest for up to 30 minutes before carving. Serve surrounded by vegetables and stuffing balls and garnished with sage and parsley. |

| Glow Wine |
Glow The Lazy Way |
 |
| Glühwein is a mulled wine, made with a special mixture of spices
Glow wine is the direct translation for Glühwein, said phonetically glue-vine, is only sticky if you spill it. The build up to Christmas in Germany is nothing without Glühwein, it plays a principal role in every Christmas Market and is simply Christmas as Germans know it. The basic recipe is simple and can be varied according to taste. If you like life fruity, try adding freshly pressed orange juice. Adding rum will blow your mind and sometimes other spices are included
1). 1 bottle of red wine
2). ¼ stick of cinammon
3). 3 thin cut lemon rinds
4). 2 orange slices
5). 2 cloves
6). 3 bay leaves
Translation (follow the number order)
1). 1 Flasche Rotwein und
2). ¼ Stange Zimt
3). 3 dünne Zitronenschalen
4). 2 Orangenscheiben
5). 2 Nelken (take care! Nelke = carnation)
6). 3 Lorbeerblätter
7). Cinammon = Zimt...
continued > > > > |
|
| |
In the supermarkets, Spar for example, we found some fruit-tea teabags called Winterzeit (Wintertime) from Teekanne: www.teekanne.de
Place one bag in a mug of cold red wine. |
|
> > > >
8). Piece of Ginger = Stück Ingwer
9). Spices = Gewürze
Heat up in a pot, with a lid on, so the alchohol does not escape, but don't let it boil. Leave for 5 minutes and remove the cinammon. If it boils, start again. Depending on taste, ginger can be added
Tip: If you use a large tea filter, the ingredients can easily be removed. Wrapping the ingredients in muslin serves the same purpose
We've tried a few of the ready-made Glühwein packets, with dried ingredients, on sale at the Christmas markets in Hamburg, but we believe it is the freshly cut fruit and fresh spices that create the taste of Glühwein. We are going to try a mix of both - the packet mixed with the addition of fresh oranges and lemons. By the way, the packets vary a lot in price. Compare the weight to the price. The larger packets are generally cheaper per 100g |
|
|
Another Glühwein variation for one person |
|
1 cube of sugar
0.25 l dry red wine
1/2 lemon (untreated)
1/2 stick cinnamon
a few drops of Curaçao
1 cup, or heat resistant glass
1 small pot
1 teaspoon
1 sieve |
|
|
| |

Permanent feature from the OUT & ABOUT page: Mad you might be saying, it's far too early to be talking about Christmas parties a few months or even over one year in advance, but did you know it usually takes a minimum of three months to set up an organised ticket based party? Organising a function and finding a venue near Christmas is usually difficult. Many started in January to book the party venue for the following December and all the other good venues were snapped up long before Christmas by others. Some venues are booked years in advance. All this could be said for entertainers, caterers and fancy dress hire as well. Quality venues, caterers and entertainers are booked well in advance.
Help might be on hand in Hamburg, as some club houses in garden association grounds remain available for longer, as do some sport association club houses. Garden association: You might have noticed large areas sectioned into private gardens with a type of garden house on each plot. In the middle of these garden areas, there is usually a club house with a telephone number on the notice board outside - these are similiar to British allotments, but very beaurocratic
Many ferries and sightseeing ships and boats in the harbour and on the Alster can be booked for functions, as can some of the underground trains and historic trains. We have a number of contacts, if you are unable to find a venue. We can sometimes organise entertainment. |
